For many women around the world, leaving the house is a normal part of life. For many Afghan women, it is unusual. It is an act of defiance.
They are banned from parks, gyms, and public baths. The home has become a prison for women in this country.
Women are not allowed to move around in public places unless they are in the company of a male relative, who is considered a mahram. They are generally only allowed to leave the house for urgent matters, in which case they must wear a chador.
From now on, according to the decree, if a woman does not cover her face outside the home, her father or closest male relative can be imprisoned or fired from a government position. Older women and girls are exempt from this law.
